Kirkwood’s mission is carried out by our members through the committees on which they serve. Kirkwood has eight committees, and each is essential to our development as Disciples of Christ. The committees that carry out our church functions are:
Administration Committee
The committee is responsible for church personnel matters, building use and other administrative concerns important to running the day-to-day operations of Kirkwood. It meets on the first Wednesday of every other month at 7:00 p.m.
Christian Education CommitteeThe Christian Education Committee's mission is to provide biblically based educational programs which help all ages come to know Christ through his teachings and help all ages grow in their faith.
We can do this by providing a spiritual and educational environment which:
- Is rooted in the Bible
- Helps build a closer relationship with God
- Nurtures the growth of Christian faith thru biblical studies
- Teaches Christian values
- Encourages the study of God's word
Our goal is to increase the participation of the youth and adults of Kirkwood in the Sunday School and youth programs.
The committee meets on the first Sunday of each month following the 10:30 a.m. worship service.
We are responsible for:
- All Sunday School Programs
- Youth and Children Programs
- Confirmation Classes
- 3rd Grade Bible Presentations
- Leadership Training and Teacher Workshops
- Youth Camps, Conferences, and Retreats
- Bible Study
- Vacation Bible School
- Receptions for Teachers and High School Graduates
- Rally Day
Kitchen Crew
The Kitchen Crew works in conjunction with other committees in hosting luncheons, dinners, receptions, etc. to encourage fellowship within the church family. These events nurture and assist members of the congregation enabling them to grow as a church family and in their relationship with God through fellowship with one another. All functions provide an opportunity for members to invite and encourage visitors and friends to join in fellowship with members of our congregation.
Outreach CommitteeThe Outreach Committee fulfills the message of Christ by looking after those in need. Its mission is "To reach out to those in need, sharing God's love through our works inspired by faith." Outreach is responsible for organizing a number of annual projects, some of which are exclusive to Kirkwood and some of which are part of a larger mission.
- The Dan Hulbert Memorial Thanksgiving Day Food Basket Drive - donations are collected to purchase and distribute food to over 50 families in need within our community
- Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Gift Drive - allows parents in need to provide clothing and various necessities to their children who might not otherwise have gifts for Christmas
- Food Pantry - provides food and personal hygiene items to those in need
- School Supply Pantry - provides supplies throughout the school year to families in need and to our neighborhood schools
- Presbyterian Answer To Hunger (PATH) - donations are collected for use in addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty around the world
- Breakfast for the Homeless - volunteers prepare and serve breakfast six times per year for the homeless at the MUST Ministries shelter
- Back Pack Ministry - back packs filled with school supplies are donated to approximately 20 children each year in support of MUST Ministries' annual back to school program
- One Great Hour of Sharing - donations are collected to assist with disaster relief around our nation and throughout the world
Outreach meets the second Sunday of each month immediately following the 10:30 a.m. worship service. You are encouraged to join us on our journey as we reach out to those in need within our world and share God's love.
Property CommitteeThe Property Committee reports to the Session and is made up of members from the congregation (membership is open with no limits). The committee meets monthly, and is responsible for maintenance and improvements to the church building and property. Committee responsibilities include addressing church property needs, organizing congregation spring and fall work days, committee work days, and lawn care.
Stewardship CommitteeAt Kirkwood, the Stewardship Committee handles the financial responsibilities. These responsibilities generally fall into two categories: day-to-day and yearly. The church treasurer handles most of the day-to-day finances of Kirkwood, such as paying bills and balancing the checkbook. In addition, several members of the committee, on a rotating basis, count the church offerings every week.
Our mission statement derives from 1 Peter 4:10: "Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received."
We attempt, with God's guidance and grace, to be good stewards of the gifts of Kirkwood. We meet at 7:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the Lower Fellowship Hall and invite anyone and everyone to join us in our service to Kirkwood and to Christ.
Worship CommitteeThe Worship Committee is the spiritual core of the Church. Our mission is to provide that Kirkwood Church has worship services that conform to the principles of the Reformed Christian Faith. As reflected in our Mission Statement, these worship services should gather us as a joyful, supportive family of faith, emphasize our relationship with God and fellow man, and send us out as disciples to proclaim, "Jesus is Lord."
The Worship Committee is responsible for:
- Assisting the Minister in planning personal and family worship
- The Church music program
- Assignment of Elders, Ushers, and Liturgists to worship services
- Children's worship time
- Communion
- Pulpit supply when the Minister is ill or on vacation
- Decor of the sanctuary
- Weddings and funerals
- Special services, including
- Ash Wednesday
- Maundy Thursday
- Easter Sunrise
- Christmas Eve
- Recording of services
- Usher's training program
